Indiana Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program offers rental assistance to low-income families. The purpose of these vouchers is to help the most vulnerable families so that they can afford safe and sanitary housing. The program will require participants to pay up to 30% of their household income for rent and utilities. Section 8 will pay the remaining rent through its voucher program.

Indiana Section 8 is funded by the U.S department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) whereas local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) manage distribution of vouchers within its jurisdiction. These local PHAs will maintain a waiting list to distribute rental grant through voucher program. The availability of vouchers depends on the region but the program is available throughout Indiana. HUD also runs a Project-Based Section 8 Rental Assistance program where eligible applicants are given vouchers to be used for living in a Section 8 rental unit. The rent is low for these rental units because HUD provides subsidies to these rental complexes to offset the cost of construction.

Indiana Section 8 will approve a house anywhere in the state as long as it meet’s HUD’s quality standard requirement. Once you’ve selected a house, PHAs will inspect the house to determine its quality standard. A house will receive approval if it’s safe and if its rent is appropriate according to the neighborhood.

Households receiving voucher through Section 8 can relocate anywhere within the state of Indiana. However, they will have to inform their local Section 8 provider. Households can also call at 317-232-7070 to ask for relocation.

If you’ve qualified for Indiana Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, you will sign a lease with your landlord. You, as a tenant, will have certain rights and duties. Similarly, your landlord will have to provide a reason to evict you.

Households looking to apply for Section 8 rental assistance will need to visit their local PHA. Every PHA maintains a waiting list for rental assistance. PHAs will close new inductions at times to overload the earlier waiting list. If the waiting list is closed, you can wait and apply when Section 8 applications are being accepted again.
